(wow that was bland..but trust me it’s epic)
Basic Review (this is about to get long): Oh bloody hell. To start, I don’t usually promote a fanfiction lightly, nor do I usually really admit to this lovely little habit I have yet to grow out of. Not because I somehow think fanfiction is lesser than novels, but mostly because then I’d have to explain away all the stories with less-than-grammar if one of my less fan-y friends ever pick up the site out of blind curiosity…I have far too many faves in yaoi and angst than I really care to share with people who might not really know me all too well. However, I have just spent the better part of five days reading this story, Dumbledore’s Army and the Year of Darkness by Thanfiction and I am in dire need of someone to share with.
So for anyone who just so happens to have an excess amount of time, nothing else they want to spend it on, and might possibly be a fan of Harry Potter, please give fanfiction a chance even if it’s not normally what you’d go for. Or at the very least, THIS story in particular.
I’m horrible at summaries so I won’t go into it here, since it’d just be me trying not to spoil anyone (my specialty) but in short, DAYD follows Neville’s trip through seventh year, after Harry has left with Hermione and Ron to hunt down the horcruxes. It follows Dumbledore’s Army and it’s development through the last year, under the rule of Snape and the Carrows. Neville’s sudden turn into a respected leader wasn’t instantaneous. It happened behind the scenes. Thanfiction takes advantage of all the loopholes of what happened in Hogwarts after Harry leaves and explores the world of a Hogwarts where crucio is a normal punishment, even a badge of honor, and a small group of kids-turned-adults prepare to make their last stand while trying to keep up the morale and protect those students that they can.
I’ll be frank; I’m the worst possible person you want to ask for a summary of near anything. Everything I possibly want to say feels like it’s linked to a spoiler. In the end, all I can really say is I’ve laughed and cried more in the past few days than I have in a very long time. Thanfiction really gives life to characters that seem to have little to none, but clearly are, were, important in some way. Ultimately I guess the story’s about life and war, especially when the war involves lives snuffed out before even really having begun to live. If the story seems even remotely interesting to you please give the first chapter a chance! It’s incredible, I swear it.
(I could go on forever about this but I shan’t bore whoever the hell’s still reading this. If anyone reads this pleasepleaseplease let me know so we can be best friends XD)
